What to wear for your portraits…

What to wear for yEveryone wants to look good in their family portraits! "What should we wear for our photo session" is one of my most frequently asked questions. In fact, if my client doesn't ask me, then you can bet I'm asking them "What are you all thinking about wearing?"

My favorite thing to do is to start by either picking out your favorite clothing article in the whole family or picking out your favorite outfit for the hardest to dress person in the family. Look at all of the colors in it. Then go to each person's closet and see what you can find that has some of the same colors in it. It's okay if big brother's shirt only has one of the colors and little sisters has another. If both of those colors are in the top you chose as the starting point, congrats - you've coordinated! Now double check to see if your choices fit in the guidelines below.

  • You have a consistent style (preppy, formal, casual, etc).

  • You've incorporated no more than 2 neutrals in addition to your colors (white, khaki, gray, black and denim all count as neutrals).

  • You've incorporated 2-4 different colors or shades that all look good together.

  • The clothes are all well fitting. Baggy and loose items don't look great in portraits.

  • Bonus: You've avoided plain white shirts and anything fluorescent colored. You've avoided white socks. You've ironed out all the wrinkled and brushed off all the pet hair. You've incorporated some cute accessories, clean shoes and a couple of interesting patterns and textures.our portraits…
